As usual, every week more players get on the band-wagon of the long and hard
fight for the valuable award, MVP of the season. Firstly, it's necessary to
underline the presence of a Spanish player in the fight for this award, Marc
Gasol. However he can hardly win it, mostly because of the physical feature
differences between an European player and an American player, although we can
say that Marc Gasol is in MVP statistics. He is considered one of the best
centers of the whole NBA, and we can observe this fact in he's stats.
Marc is averaging 20.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game. And his
magnificent stats isn't enough but he also leads his team, the Memphis
Grizzlies, who are situated in fourth position in the western conference with
21 wins and 8 defeats. We also have to count the difficulty differences with
the other conference. The hardest opponents in the conference are, the San
Antonio Spurs, current winners of the NBA. Oklahoma Thunder, always the
favorites, with the current MVP of the season, Kevin Durant and the actual
leaders of the conference, Golden State Warriors, who have one of the serious
candidates for the MVP.
We must emphasize the qualitative leap of Marc Gasol in this season,
although he started with this improvement, at the end of the last season. This
leap both in rebounds and points, from 1.2 to 8.2 and from 11.4 to 20.2
respectively, is due to the evolution in defense and to a considerably loss of
weight in this last summer. The middle brother of the Gasols has expanded his
repertoire in attack which has made him increase his contribution of
annotation.
The team of Marc Gasol, trained by Dave Joerger, has also noticed the
improvement of the Spanish player, one of the bests players in the team. Last
year, Memphis finished seventh in the league and in Play-offs they didn't pass
the first round against Thunder, with a lot of injured players.
In effect, we can expect a lot of these
Grizzlies of Marc Gasol, the Play-offs are quite easy for this team if the
season doesn't get to long. In the individual part, we think it's very hard to
expect Marc to win the MVP but one more affordable aim is his presence in the
All-Star and if Pau Gasol also goes in, they will be the first brothers to play
at the same time.
